A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” declared the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
